Waveney breaks into top 10 for recycling
11 November 2009
Households in Waveney have proved their green credentials and helped the district to break into the nationwide top 10 for recycling.
Waveney District Council has been officially named the number one recycling authority in Norfolk and Suffolk following the release of new figures from the department for the environment, food and rural affairs (Defra).
The council's success has also seen it ranked eighth out of 398 English local authorities, having increased its recycling rate from 51.62pc in 2007/8 to 55.91pc in the last year.
Ken Sale, the council's portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This is yet another outstanding result and the district's recycling efforts are going from strength to strength. Residents should be very proud of their efforts in helping the environment.”
Most homes in Waveney have three wheelie bins to sort their rubbish and small caddy containers for the disposal of compostable food waste.
Mr Sale said: “To hit 55pc is wonderful, but if we are to hold on to our number one position in Norfolk and Suffolk, we need to continue the good work.
“Waveney has proved how innovative it can be with initiatives such as our food waste scheme, but we must never rest on our laurels and now we want to hit 60pc and beyond.”
