Charity teams take to the water
28 July 2009
TEAMS representing local businesses and organisations took to the water on Sunday to raise thousands of pounds for leukaemia charity The Anthony Nolan Trust.
More than 1,000 people attended the trust's annual dragon boat race at Whitlingham Broad, Trowse, near Norwich.
It was contested by 21 teams - many wearing fancy dress - rowing in heats on a 250m course.
Each team of between 11 and 15 people had to collect a minimum of £750 in sponsorship to enter the event, helping to raise an estimated £25,000.
Sharon King, regional fundraising manager for the charity, said: “It was a very successful day. There was a fantastic atmosphere and everyone had a great time.
“What makes the event great is the adrenaline and the camaraderie between the teams. That's what brings people back year after year.”
First place in the race went to the Swan Lake team from North Walsham Round Table. In second place was Sudbury Under 18s Rugby Club. Top fund-raisers were the Missing Link team from North Walsham Round Table, and the overall prize, awarded for a combination of race points and amount raised, went to The Craftsmen from J S Hay.
The trust is looking for even more teams to enter next year's event. To find out more call Sharon King on 0115 9269 645.
